THE STRUGGLES OF BEING A STUDENT

The Struggles of Being a Student

School is a place where students come to learn and grow. It has rooms for different subjects for different mastery. Schools should be helping students develop both their minds and social skills. Besides learning should be fun, making school a place for all-around development and at the same time for enjoyment.

However, is this the school where every student are all going to?

Being a student requires a lot of courage, as it involves stepping out of your comfort zone to face new challenges, subjects, and deal with the pressures of academic performance and validation. Students often face issues such as difficulty understanding complex topics, time management, peer pressure, bullying, and dealing with high expectations from parents and teachers. They may also struggle with personal issues, health problems, or balancing schoolwork with extracurricular activities.

SCHOOL SHOULD BE FUN!! ( As they said)

But Is it really the matter right now?

We conducted an interview and most of the students ranging from Grade 7-11 are stressing about their life as a student. Their struggles, hardships and challenges they're facing in their school life. They stated a ton of things that are caging them from enjoying their highschool life.

1. Sleep Deprivation:

Sleep deprivation can lead to a lack of concentration in class, or an increase in tiredness. This creates a cycle of stress that will happen non-stop, which can affect the student’s school experience. 7.2 out of 10 students that we interviewed stated this as a reason for them struggling at school. Instead of being able to focus, sleep deprivation increases our chances of day-dreaming in class. The result of this will make students break concentration easily. Academic performance often suffers when the student is unable to focus.

2. Peer Pressure:

Peer Pressure or being influenced by your peers can affect a student's well-being which can cause them to fail on certain performances. 3.4 out of 10 students state this as their reason for not being able to enjoy school. Students who associate with peers who prioritize achievements may begin to pressure themselves to gain the attention they want. Peer pressure or the desire to impress their peers can override a student's fear of taking risks to overcome the obstacles that can happen to their life.

3 School Events:

Events can often be a struggle for many students. Many of us can relate to this when in a group to perform for our section. 2 out of 10 students we interviewed added this as a struggle in their school life. If the practice is not worked out on time, students will stay up for a certain amount of time in school, which can be disruptive to teachers that want them to go home early. Students may feel compelled by themselves to participate in multiple events, leading to an overwhelming schedule and increased academic pressure.

4. Lack of quality time with your family:

Non-stop studying can cause lack of quality time with your family. You'll avoid the interaction with your parents, siblings and any other relatives of this. 2.4 out of 10 students claimed this as their struggle, they would worry that they're getting distant from their loved ones. This can affect the well-being of a student to interact with other people in many workplaces. Student's absence of interaction with their family can result in a less healthy mental status of the family, reducing their mental health and increasing feelings of unhappiness.

5. Too much activities:

Too many activities is the main cause of why students deprive themselves of their room; to study. 8 out of 10 students find this matter very challenging, stressing, and quite irritating. Not only can this deprive the student, it can also cause stress and lack of focus on how to finish their school work on the due date that their teacher assigned it to. Engaging in too many extracurricular activities or participating in activities that do not interest students like us can have a negative impact on ourselves and our performances.

6. Cost of projects:

Many students are having troubles with the cost of their projects. 6.8 out of 10 students argue that this is one of the reasons why education is difficult. Certain students in schools succumb to the lack of money, which can cause not finishing their projects neatly. This can cause students to find a job while studying workloads. Not only is it tiring, it can cause lack of time management which can result in them not finishing their projects on time.

7. Joining organizations:

Joining organizations in school can improve the school's environment, not only it can improve our school's environment, it can also help us diverse with other people, develop soft skills and gain leadership for anyone, But this can also cause struggles on many students on how to balance their time between organizational activities and academic responsibilities, leading to decreased participation in class learning and potential laziness in our academic pursuits. 3.2 out of 10 students considered this as an added hardship in their studies.

8. Bullying:

Bullying behaviour can impact a students whole well-being. Bullying has social or mental effects on student's health, it can make students feel unhappy and frightened while minding their own business in school. It’s not just the students being bullied who are affected. 3 out of 10 students that we interviewed admit that this is one of their struggles with their school life. Most of us students say they don’t like seeing bullying in schools, it makes them feel worried and uncomfortable. Students who bully others are also more likely to have problems in their home and be unhappy with their life.

9. Treatment of teachers:

Treatment of teachers when interacting with their students can sometimes be a negative process that can have an impact on the student's well-being and can decrease their interest in learning, which will negatively affect the student's academic performance. 2.4 out of 10 students state that this particular matter also affects their education negatively. If students are uncomfortable with their teacher teaching with such no-manners or with a negative attitude, it can probably hinder their ability to focus, participate, and effectively learn.

10. Environment:

One thing that can affect the student's academic performance is the environment that they're learning in. Overcrowded classrooms is one of the causes that have been found that can contribute to poor academic achievement of a student. Another one of the problems is a noisy or chaotic learning environment, it will cause lack of focus on many students. 8 out of 10 students complain about the environment of their school drastically affecting how they study.

11. Amount of time in school:

Many schools worldwide has many little amount of studying hours, which can help students concentrate to their schools works without any commotion that can disturbed them. Some schools in the Philippines are different, students spend 8-9 hrs in school to study, which can cause stress, laziness and boredom of having a lot of work to do for some students. Which is why 7 out 10 students found this set-up quite unbearable and exhausting.

12. Academic Pressure:

One of the most common struggles of being a student is academic pressure. Students are always trying to live up to high expectations, whether these expectations are their own, set by parents, or set by teachers. Such pressure may cause stress, anxiety, and depression.

(In such a case, getting good time management strategies and setting effective goals whereby one remembers that seeking help from teachers or parents is a strength and not a weakness.

The struggles of student life are a part of the journey that shapes and molds the person. Each challenge helps them work their way around for a better future. Thus, identification of these challenges will equip them to handle both at the academic and personal fronts. After all, it is through these challenges that a student will gain strength to surge ahead with their studies and in life. But it is important that the school should held a hand in maintaining students health and at the same time learning and growing.  Because right now,

Students tend to just survive, not to live with it
